INFORMATION FOR STUDENTS

WHY is this contest being offered?
Forests are amazing! They provide environmental, social, and economic benefits, from the deepest backwoods to the urban core. They also provide jobs – and a lot of them! This is your chance to explore the diverse career opportunities that await you in the forest sector. From logger to forester and from sawmill worker to human resources administrator or company CEO, the forest sector offers high-demand employment with living wages, benefits, and a good quality of life. 

 

WHAT is the purpose of this contest?
The contest organizers want to hear your perspectives on these jobs, and they hope that you may consider working in the forest sector someday.

 

WHO may participate?  
Students ages 14-18 from Washington, Oregon, Idaho, or Montana. Students may submit entries as individuals or work with other students as a team.

 

HOW can you participate?
You are invited to make a video that creatively provides information about the value of one or more career possibilities in the forest sector. 

 

WHAT are the prizes?​

  • GRAND PRIZE (one awarded): $1000

  • SECOND PLACE (one awarded): $500

  • THIRD PLACE (one awarded): $250

  • FINALIST (up to twelve awarded): $100

Prize winners are chosen from the finalists.

 

WHEN may you enter your video? 
Entries are accepted between October 1, 2022, and April 7, 2023. Winners will be announced May 1, 2023.

THE PROCESS

  • Review the Contest Rules. By participating or attempting to participate in this contest, it is deemed that you have received, understood, and agreed to these Contest Rules.

  • Read through the Judging Criteria so you know what is expected and how the videos will be judged.

  • Check out the links under the RESOURCES  tab to help you get started.

  • Conduct at least one interview with a forestry professional. Start here.

  • Consult at least two other sources of information during your research. Start here.

  • Consider engaging and creative ways to communicate through video, such as storytelling, creating a news segment, movie trailer, animation, music video, or commercial – or another idea you have.

  • Plan and create a video up to 90 seconds long that creatively portrays the value of one or more careers in the forest sector. The video must be your own original, unpublished work and must not include any third-party logos or copyrighted material. (See Contest Rules for more details.)

  • Upload your video to YouTube as an Unlisted video. Need help?

  • Use the Entry Checklist to make sure you have all the information and forms you need to officially enter the contest.

  • Complete the Entry Form and submit the signed Actor Release Form(s), Parent Permission Form(s) and the URL for your video between October 1, 2022 and April 7, 2023.

  • You may submit one video per person or team.
